Oklahoma plates stay with the donor, not the donated vehicle. Remove them before the tow. If the car already left, contact us right away and ask whether the plates can still be removed before processing.
After removal, transfer the plates to your next vehicle if allowed, or follow the state motor-vehicle office’s instructions to surrender or cancel them. Keep any receipt. Then file your notice of transfer/release of liability.
What to do with your plates
Confirm the current plate rule
Before you touch the plates, confirm the current rule with the state motor-vehicle office. Plate handling is not national. Some states require plates to stay with the vehicle. Others treat plates as the donor’s property. For your donation, use the current state instruction, not a rule from another state or an old sale.
Remove plates before the tow
Take the front and rear plates off before the vehicle is loaded. Put the screws in a bag or envelope if you plan to reuse them. Do not leave plates in the trunk, glove box, or back seat. If the tow operator is already there, remove the plates first, then hand over the keys and paperwork.
Transfer or surrender them
If you are replacing the donated vehicle, ask whether the plates can be transferred to your next vehicle. If you are not transferring them, follow the motor-vehicle office’s instructions to surrender, cancel, or otherwise close out the plates. Do not guess. Ask what proof you should receive for your records before you leave the counter or finish the process.
Keep the surrender receipt
Keep the surrender or cancellation receipt with your donation paperwork. This receipt is your proof that the plates were handled and the registration can be cancelled. Some insurance companies also ask for this proof before they will cancel coverage without a penalty. Save a paper copy, and take a clear photo of it.
File the transfer notice

Why rules differ by state
License plates are handled in two general ways. In most states, the plates belong to the donor. The donor removes them before the vehicle leaves, then transfers them to another vehicle or surrenders/cancels them with the motor-vehicle office. In a minority of states, plates stay with the vehicle. For donors in the Tulsa Metro, the key task is to follow the current local state rule and keep written proof. Common questions
What if the tow driver says to leave the plates on?
Do not leave the plates on just because someone is in a hurry. If the state rule says the plates stay with you, remove them before the vehicle is loaded. If there is any dispute, pause and confirm with the motor-vehicle office or call us before the tow continues.
Can I cancel insurance as soon as the car is picked up?
Ask your insurance company what proof it needs. Many insurers want proof that the registration was cancelled or that the plates were surrendered before they cancel without penalty. Keep coverage in place until your insurer confirms the correct cancellation step for your policy.
What if I forgot and the car is already gone?
Contact us as soon as you notice. Ask whether the plates can still be removed safely before the vehicle is processed. If they cannot be recovered, ask the motor-vehicle office how to document the donation and close or protect the registration record.
